This work highlights the writing of contemporary American Jewish authors, gathering US contributors in literature, history, Jewish studies, American Jewish history, and modern Jewish literature. Part 1 collects essays by 19 Jewish authors (most born in the US) who have won the Edward Lewis Wallant Award between 1972 and 2012, offering not their award-winning essays but other examples of their work over the past 20 years. Part 2 presents stories and book chapters by 17 Jewish writers representing the New Diaspora; some were born in the US, while others were born in Russia, South Africa, Israel, and Canada. Most of the writers in this section offer secular rather than religious perspectives. The selections are from works published between 1989 and 2013. Authors represented include Edith Pearlman, Myla Goldberg, Francine Prose, Joseph Skibell, Jonathan Safran Foer, Rachel Kadish, and Scott Nadelson.
